The 2021 Toyota 4Runner arrived in Ontario in the fall of 2020. If all things remain on course, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner should arrive this fall.

Nightshade & Trail Edition Package Options

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner offers a Trail Special Edition. This package comes with the SR5 features but includes a sliding cargo deck and Yakima LoadWarrior roof rack, plus a beverage cooler. There is also a Nightshade Special Edition that builds on the Limited trim but adds some black exterior accents to replace the chrome. Both of these packages are expected to be part of the 2022 Toyota 4Runner lineup as well.

Off-Road Capability | 2022 vs. 2021 Toyota 4Runner

2021 Toyota 4Runner models come with 9.6 inches of ground clearance, available four-wheel-drive with a two-speed transfer case, plus skid plates. However, the TRD models provide even more functioning, including a low-speed crawl control system and locking rear differential. The 2022 Toyota 4Runner models should offer the same features and capability.

2021 Toyota 4Runner SUVs include a 270-horsepower 4.0-liter V6. This engine comes with RWD and a five-speed automatic transmission, but you can upgrade to 4WD. This configuration is expected to remain the same with the 2022 Toyota 4Runner.

Interior Design | 2022 vs. 2021 Toyota 4Runner

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner is well-appointed with the latest tech features. Even the base models include Bluetooth, four USB ports, a Wi-Fi hot spot, an eight-speaker audio system, Amazon Alexa, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio and an eight-inch touch screen. These same features are carrying over to the 2022 Toyota 4Runner models.

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner is available with an optional third-row, allowing for five- and seven-passenger configurations. If you opt for the five-passenger configuration, there will be 46.3 cubic feet of room behind the back seat and 88.8 total cubic feet with that row down. However, the third-row models include nine cubic feet of storage space behind the back row. These figures are expected to remain the same with the 2022 Toyota 4Runner.

The NHTSA awarded the 2021 Toyota 4Runner with a four-star rating. This Toyota SUV also contains a multitude of standard safety features.
